Sports Teams of Orange County

The Orange County and the Los Angeles metropolitan area as a whole is home to several professional and collegiate sports teams. The Greater Los Angeles Area has eleven major league professional teams: the Anaheim Ducks (which represent the city and the metropolitan area in the National Hockey League alongside the Los Angeles Kings), the Los Angeles Angels (which represent the metropolitan area as well as the city in Major League Basketball alongside the Los Angeles Dodgers), the Los Angeles Chargers (which represents the area in the National Football League alongside the Los Angeles Rams), the Los Angeles Clippers (which, alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, represent the general area), the Los Angeles Dodgers (MLB), Los Angeles FC and LA Galaxy (which are the area’s soccer teams), the Los Angeles Kings (NHL), the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA), Los Angeles Sparks (which represent the city in the Women’s National Basketball Association), and the Los Angeles Rams (NFL). USC Trojans football, UCLA Bruins men’s basketball, USC Trojans baseball, USC Trojans track & field, and Cal State Fullerton Titans baseball are all historically premier organizations in college sports. Other major sports teams include UCLA Bruins Football, Los Angeles Sparks, Pepperdine Waves baseball, and formerly the Los Angeles Raiders and Los Angeles Aztecs. Between them, these Los Angeles area sports teams have won a combined 105 Championship Titles. Los Angeles area colleges have produced upwards of 200 National Championship Teams, primarily from USC Trojans and UCLA Bruins of the Pac-12 Conference. The 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympics were held in Los Angeles. In 2028 the city will host the Olympics for a third time.

As for where the teams call their home bases are, well, here they are.

Four teams share the massive multi-purpose Staples Center, these are the Los Angeles Kings of the NFL, and the two NBA teams of the city, the Clippers and Lakers. The Los Angeles Sparks also call this sports center their home base.

Then there’s the StubHub Center, which has the second largest number of teams calling it home. Exactly two teams call this sports center their home base, namely the LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer, and the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League.

The Major League Baseball teams that represent the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers have their own respective stadiums. These are the aptly named Angel and Dodger Stadiums. The Angel Stadium itself is inside the county of Orange County.

As for the other teams, the Rams play at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Los Angeles FC play in the Banc of California Stadium, and the Anaheim Ducks play at the Honda Center. The Ducks are based inside Orange County as well, their home base just across Angel Stadium.

As for founding dates, the Dodgers are some of the oldest teams in the entirety of the MLB, being founded in the 19th century, 1883 to be exact, the other team, the Angels, were founded early in the 1960s, 1961 to be precise. For those that occupy Staples Center, the Kings were founded in 1967, the Clippers in 1970, and the Lakers in 1947, the Sparks were founded in the year 1997. The youngest team in the town are the Los Angeles FC, which were only founded in 2018, their counterparts the LA Galaxy on the other hand, were founded in 1996. The Anaheim Ducks were founded in 1993. The NFL teams, the Chargers and Rams, were founded in 1960 and 1936 respectively.
